Recognition of equivalence of a foreign diploma

Procedure to request the recognition
of equivalence of a foreign diploma

Since the legal principle of equivalence does not exist in France, you may be asked to provide an equivalence certificate attesting to your level of studies when your application for admission to the INSTN is examined.

This certificate, written in French, certifies the educational level obtained in your country of origin and describes your academic training.

You must therefore enquire of the teaching administrator or secretary of the academic programme for which you wish to apply, to find out whether you will need to submit this document.

If it is required, it must be drawn up, at your initiative, by the CIEP (Centre international d’études pédagogiques). The fee for this certificate is €55 (2008 rate).

What documents are required for your application file?

List of documents you must supply to complete your file for recognition of academic equivalence:

  • A photocopy of the diploma(s) for which you are seeking recognition in the original language.
  • A photocopy of the translation of the diploma, made by a sworn translator (a list of sworn translators may be consulted at the town hall, the prefecture or the magistrates’ court) or by the official authorities of the country of origin. *
  • A photocopy of documentary proof of your completion of academic studies issued by the establishment (i.e. transcripts, attestations of attendance, etc.).
  • A photocopy of the translation of this documentary proof, made by a sworn translator or by the official authorities of the country of origin. *
  • A letter mentioning your contact details by post, telephone and e-mail, explaining the reason for your request for an equivalence certificate (e.g. registration in an educational institution) and specifying that you agree to pay the application fee of €55 (due upon receipt of an invoice that will be sent to you by post).
  • A photocopy of an identity document (ID).

* Except for documents written in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish.

When you request an equivalence certificate attesting to your educational level, you implicitly give your consent to the performance of verifications with the relevant authorities in the country of origin.
