Reference: 902
Logo ENEN Web
OBJECTIVES
The main objective is to acquire the advanced knowledge in reactor thermal hydraulics requested for multi-scale computation and analysis of light water reactors (LWRs):
• identify the main issues in thermal and hydraulic design of LWR,
• explain the flow regimes encountered in LWR operating conditions (normal and accidental),
• choose a relevant model to solve the flow (mass, momentum and energy balance equations),
• describe the boiling crisis and its consequences on BWR and PWR design,
• describe the two-phase flow instabilities and the consequences on BWR design.
AUDIENCE
Engineers, researchers and PhD students involved in LWR thermal hydraulic analysis (design, safety, operation): nuclear industry companies, research centres, Technical Safety Organizations (TSO), regulatory bodies.
PREREQUISITES
The level of the course is equivalent to a Master in nuclear engineering. The pre-requisite are:
• Principle and operation of nuclear reactors,
• Bachelor level in fluid mechanics or mechanical engineering.

It is possible to attend the first module of this course: "General background".
CONTENT
• Balance equations for two-phase flow: three-dimensional form, computational multi-flow dynamics approach.
• Advanced models for two-phase flow: multi-field, interfacial area transport…
• Closure laws for CMFD.
• Experimental techniques and validation process of physical models.
• Numerical methods for two-phase flow.
• Flow limitations encountered in LWR: static and dynamic instabilities, critical flow, flooding...
• Analysis of main accidental transients to consider in the thermal hydraulic design of LWR (Design Basis Accidents).
TEACHING METHOD
Lectures, exercises, numerical simulation (lab sessions with FLICA4 code).

Maximum number of trainees: 16.
